Creating the Totally Cool ’80s Retro Room

The TLC Book Design office before becoming the Retro Room.

For years, my home office has had a nice, classy Provencal theme. This summer, it was painted a bold color and it’s now becoming the TC ’80s Retro Room. This is so much fun and will likely be a work in progress for years, putting up shelves, posters, and whatnot as I find each new treasure.

Right now, you can see the CDs, albums, and cassettes. (Man, I wish I still had my old cassette collection!) My 5-disc CD changer died last week (tears), so I’m on the lookout for a new one. This $8 silver unit from Goodwill will do for now.

(That’s Bandit, one of my fuzzy companions.)

The rugs were custom made out of roller rink carpet and glow under a blacklight—something I need to buy. The cheap Halloween bulb I found just doesn’t cut it.

A long-time friend from high school recently gifted me all of her Fisher Price Little People items. What fun! I just need to find some of the old wooden people. I have two a neighbor kindly donated. The Cheers sign was given to me through Facebook.

I made this cassette coffee table and am offering this model or customized tops for sale. (Email or comment below if you’re interested.)

Check out these totally awesome movie and TV show license plates. You can get them from the nice people at Celebrity Machines!

Unless I already had it, I’ve vowed to only buy items that make me gasp with an instant “I HAVE to have that!” response. Stay tuned as I find new treasures! I’ve been posting them on Twitter, IG, and FB. What are your most treasured items from the past? Please share!

Blessings,
Tami
